My journey from Iphone to Android – all over a radio and a battery … next stop Blackberry or Nokia / Windows ?

Celt Digital: Android Apple fightthe fight continues:  Apple v Android

The mobile market is ever evolving – many android users started their smartphone experience with the iphone ….  its ubiquitous presence has dominated smart phone use  since the term became common though it was actually back in 1997 when the term ‘smartphone’ was used for the first time with Ericsson unveiling the concept phone GS88,  the first device labelled as a  ’smartphone’.

I am in that category only switching to android in February of 2011 – finally fed up of poor battery life being shortenned by my use of data roaming in order to listen to the radio …. Having enjoyed Nokia phones with built in radio (wow :) ) I was so annoyed that Apple were seemingly being contrary just for the sake of it – there didn’t see any logic in Apple asserting that if people wanted a radio they would get a radio when at the same time Apple raced to get the latest camera(s) in their phones –  well usually lagging a little behind the competition. Woody Harrelson, a dirty cop in new movie Rampart, also dirties his copy with Reddit!

Rampart actor Woody HarrelsonWoody Harrelson, whose breakthrough role came all those years ago as a bartender in Cheers, has just had his latest movie, Rampart  hit our screens.  In the usual round of promotional drives following release, Woody, or maybe on of his pr company’s interns, decided to use the social news site, Reddit, which calls itself the ‘front page of the internet’.  He must be rueing this decision today as he received over 9488 comments in 22 hours … mostly very negative!  In Rampart, he plays a dirty LA cop – on Reddit he seemed to be punished in real life for this screen role or at least his lack of preparation for the AMA task on Redd!

Making local, global – the emotional power of social engagement

General store interior. Moundville, Alabama, U...

Remember when we shopped locally , the corner store, the fruit and veg store, the small coffee shop we know and loved …  we went there because we were supporting local people we knew whose families and our family were intertwined through generations perhaps of living together in the same community.  Trust, loyalty and convenience were the big factors at play in influencing our buying.

Then came the advent of the big supermarket chains, shopping centres and the local store around the corner seemed doomed ….  advertising and large corporate pr spends influenced buying patterns where before word of mouth from your neighbour/forefather was more often the factor at play.  The Generation X & Y were born!  Then came along a movement to support local business, business recommended to us by word of mouth.  San Francisco was an early example where local people wanted to support local business – and block Starbucks from opening in their neighbourhoods.

Varied role of Social Media

2011 was definately a year when Social Media became a major player in global news events be it the ‘Arab Spring’, the shooting dead of Osama Bin Laden, the bloodied death pre and post mortem pictures  of Gadaffi that tweeted all over the world in seconds …

These are some of the big examples to show the power or influence social media can have in shaping the news.  Coupled with the power of social media in commerce, in our personal lives and in education social media and the digital world is part of our lives in every aspect really – there are many applications of social media in our lives …

Social media can be an instrument of justice and equity, an agent of change as easy as it can be  an instrument of good customer service.  In the aftermath of the recent libel of Fr Kevin Reynolds by RTÉ, it was tragically ignored by the national broadcaster … Continue reading

Modern technology offers great help to us in taking away the pressure of remembering exact information …. we have all seen how we know longer need to remember every single number we need to use – we save it on our mobile or simcard and we just look up the name or use favourites  or for example rather than learn off all the scientific elements we can just ‘google it’ …. indeed the ability to set many different personal alarms for our appointments or use an electronic todo list  are further examples of how technology can remove the stress of trying to remember  leaving us free to think, in the safe knowledge such detailed information is just a click away …
